What is the Joy in Christmas?

What is the Joy of Christmas? If the joy of Christmas is found solely in traditions: putting up a tree, cooking special meals, shopping, wrapping and giving presents, then, where is the joy when doing those things are no longer possible? In yesterday’ meditation, I discussed that there are people that are experiencing grief because of loss of loved ones or because loss of home or financial ability. We pray and support those going through the grief journey.

What about the rest of us? Advent provides a time for us to consider source for our joy. The post yesterday about those going through loss encouraged me to think about my relationship with traditions. There have been times during the holidays when I dove into a real funk because I was not going to be with family. Now after reflection, I realize that I was choosing to abandon true joy altogether when Christmas traditions did not meet my expectations. Lord have mercy and help me to do better!

The true source for our joy is this: A Savior is born to you, who is Christ the Lord.

The joy of Christmas is this: while we were lost, God came for us! He who controls the Laws of Physics, Space, and Time, broke through to bring us light and life! Most of us experience periods of grief and loss in life. It is encouraging to know that God’s love for us remains constant. The God who takes our nature upon Himself is not going to leave us. And, even during times of disappointment,  He is our cause to celebrate. There is a joy that we can count on.

May this be the joy of Christmas for you and as well as a cause to celebrate, share, and throw a feast: A Savior is born to us who is Christ the Lord.
