Fear, Faith and Joy
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:8-14
As I read this passage, I was struck by the act of faith shown by the shepherds. That evening, while maintaining their watch when they had a terrifying experience. I would imagine it would take quite an event to frighten shepherds. After all, they had defend their sheep from poachers and animals in a treacherous landscapes and at night which required some bravery. But, instead of running, they heard the angel bring good tidings of great joy – the birth of a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
In their frightened state, they embraced the message of hope. They believed the message of the angels and putting aside fear, in faith they ran toward hope to find the Savior.
May we all embrace hope this Advent and run in faith like the shepherds to the Savior.
